A local Trinamool Congress leader, Abul Kalam Azad, was killed during a birthday party in the Lakshipur area of Englishbazar, Malda. The incident took place on Thursday night. Azad was allegedly attacked with sharp weapons inside a locked room following a dispute. He was known to be active in local TMC activities and had business ties in land dealings with the accused.
Police sources stated that the accused is a member of the Kazigram Gram Panchayat and also associated with land trading. During the party, which Azad attended with his wife Shiuli Khatun and a few associates, a confrontation occurred. It escalated into violence, after which Azad was locked in a room and attacked. His body was later recovered from the spot.
Three others, including Azad’s wife, were injured during the incident and are being treated at Malda Medical College and Hospital. A case has been registered, and investigations are underway to trace the accused. The incident has led to security deployment in the area to prevent unrest.
